Toyota To Spend $1 Billion To Build Corollas In Mexico

Toyota-Mexico-announcement-0Toyota will build a new plant in the state of Guanajuato in Central Mexico to manufacture the Corolla. The company said it will invest approximately $1 billion in the new production facility, which is expected to employ around 2,000 people and have an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

The announcement is part of a multi-year plan to realign its manufacturing operations in North America in support of the recently-announced Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).

Once the new Mexican plant starts building Corolla vehicles in 2019 for the 2020 model year, Toyota’s Canadian plant in Cambridge, Ontario, will switch from producing Corollas to mid-sized, higher-value vehicles. This move will mark Toyota’s first major reinvestment in the plant since it opened in 1997.

The automaker also said it will make significant new investments over several years in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s (TMMC) assembly plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario, in order to implement TNGA modifications. The Woodstock plant will continue building the RAV4, while the Cambridge South Plant will continue to produce the Lexus RX 350 and 450h.

These moves will help Toyota group production by common vehicle platforms in each North American plant to improve efficiency and enhance flexibility. “Our next-generation production facility in Mexico will be a model for the future of global manufacturing and set a new standard for innovation and excellence. Transforming our Canadian vehicle assembly plants is an equally important part of our strategic plan to position the North America region for sustainable long-term growth,” said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota North America.

Toyota’s vehicle assembly facility in Guanajuato will be Toyota’s 15th in North America, its first since 2011 and its largest investment in Mexico to date.

Toyota Pays Tribute to Jeremy Clarkson and Top Gear

JClrksntoyUniversal Toyota loved Top Gear! In honor of Sir Jeremy Clarkson, Toyota created a tribute video to showcase his incredible talent and humor. Well played, Toyota. Well played.

Toyota seems to love Jeremy Clarkson and what he did with and for the manufacturer on the Top Gear show. It has just released a small tribute video to the presenter showing “all his best bits” (that made them look good in the process).

Who could forget the Hilux destruction saga, or the more recent and deeply positive GT86 review, a car which you can drift while reading a book, according to Jeremy.

The Japanese automaker wasn’t in the least bit offended by his Corolla/refrigerator/washing machine lineup joke – arguably and objectively one of the best jokes he’s ever made on TV. It wasn’t on top gear, but another show he hosted called Clarkson’s Motor Years.

But don’t worry Toyota, Jeremy won’t sit on the sidelines for too long and before you know it he’ll be back to work. What kind of work and where? Well, we don’t know that yet and probably neither does he.

Facelifted 2016 Toyota Corolla Altis Sedan Scooped

Who thinks this would be an awesome addition to our US-available vehicles?! WE DO! Universal Toyota strives to be at the forefront of innovation and functionality! Until the Altis shows up here, check our amazing selection of new sedans!

Images of what is believed to be the facelifted version of the ASEAN region Toyota Corolla Altis sedan have emerged on the web.

Offered in a number of Southeast Asian nations such as the Philippines as well as in India, the Altis is one of the many market-specific versions of Toyota’s popular Corolla compact sedan, and is almost identical (cosmetically) to the European model.

The undisguised pre-production car seen here has newly designed front and rear ends. The face incorporates Toyota’s “X” styling theme with a pointy front grille and what look like LED units on the new bumper’s corners.

At the back, this Altis has clear tail lamp graphics along with a redesigned bumper and a rear deck spoiler. Whether this is a regular or some kind of sports edition of the 2016 Corolla remains unknown, but we should find out soon.

Is This Europe’s 2016 Toyota Corolla Facelift, Asia’s New Corolla Hybrid Or Both?

2016-Toyota-Corolla-FL-Carscoops1400Always the face of innovation. Could this really be the next 2016 Toyota Corolla!? Universal Toyota is looking forward to the future of sedans, and we know we will always be on the forefront! Stop by today or visit us online to see our in stock Corollas and Camrys!

After the facelifted Auris hatchback and Touring Sports models presented at the Geneva show this week, Toyota may be preparing an update for its other compact model, the Corolla sedan.

These screenshots were taken from a fresh set of animated videos from Toyota Europe showcasing the firm’s new range of advanced active-safety systems bundled under the ‘Toyota Safety Sense’ umbrella.

The animated car shown in all clips looks like a facelifted version of the European-spec Corolla sedan with a pointier new face and a bumper design modeled after the revised Auris. Some minor changes seem to have taken place at the back as well, including a slightly different chrome strip between the lights and a revised bumper.

More intriguingly, the instrument cluster shots clearly show a hybrid model gauge on the left hand side.

Toyota offers a number of market-specific Corollas with various styling and mechanical changes around the world, so if this isn’t the European model, the only other explanation we can think of is that it depicts the upcoming Corolla Hybrid with a 1.5-liter petrol engine assisted by an electric motor, reportedly designed for China and possibly, other Asian countries.

A big hat tip to Ayberk!

Refreshed Toyota Auris Receives New 1.2-Liter Turbo in Geneva

000At Universal Toyota we’re always looking ahead to strive for the best, technology-savvy improvements in vehicle history. Just recently at the Geneva Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the fresh-faced Auris, packed with technological enhancements and a shiny new face for Toyota! Visit us today to see our variety of sedans and fun new additions to your vehicle we have to make your life easier!

The Auris, Toyota’s answer to the VW Golf and Ford Focus, is finally starting to catch up to the leading pack as it receives its first downsized turbocharged petrol power plant. It’s a 1.2-liter unit and it’s part of a 14-strong new engine offensive planned by Toyota over the course of 2014 and 2015.

The engine is direct-injected and intelligent variable valve timing, as well. Power wise, it’s average in the sector of turbocharged 1.2s, putting out 115 hp but its torque figure is excellent, at 185 Nm; what’s more impressive is that the latter is delivered linearly between 1,500 and 4,000 where the torque curve is not a curve, but a straight line.

Equipping the Auris, the engine is capable of pushing it to 100 km/h or 62 mph in 10.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 km/h or 125 mph. Efficiency and emissions are also competitive: 4.7 l/100 km average (60 mpg UK / 50 mpg US).

It’s interesting to note that using the intelligent variable valve timing, the engine can decide to run in Otto or Atkinson cycles; as the manufacturer explains, “the latter is used in extremely low load conditions, when the intake valve remains open for a fraction of time, after the compression stroke has set in, allowing part of the gas charge to be pushed back into the intake. As a result, the effective compression stroke is shortened. Pumping losses are reduced, since the pressure on the piston is lower, and also the throttle valve can be opened wider.”

The refreshed Toyota Auris just debuted at the Geneva motor show, with a fresh face matching the rest of the range, this new turbo engine and several mechanical and interior enhancements too.

Toyota to More Than Quadruple Production of New Mirai Fuel Cell Car

On Thursday2015-Toyota-Mirai-3, Toyota announced plans to significantly increase production of its Mirai fuel cell car after a successful launch in Japan this past December.

The Japanese automaker said the new plan calls for production to increase from 700 units this year to approximately 2,000 in 2016 and around 3,000 in 2017.

“Considering the approximately 1,500 orders received in the first month of sales in Japan, and the upcoming launches in Europe and the United States later this year, it was decided that the supply structure should be adjusted to reflect the level of demand for the vehicle,” Toyota said in a statement.

Toyota’s original sales projections for Japan were only 400 cars during its first year in the market. Many analysts believe that one of the biggest problems that fuel cell cars face is the limited availability of hydrogen fueling stations, but Toyota said it is considering this issue.

“Following the production increases, sales plans for Japan, the US and Europe will be formulated, taking into consideration the level of hydrogen infrastructure development, energy policies, car purchasing subsidies, consumer demand, environmental regulations and other factors in each region.”

The Mirai’s powertrain system combines hydrogen and oxygen from the air to generate electricity that can power the car’s electric motor for approximately 300 miles (483 km) on a single fill-up.

Toyota Details New 2016 Tacoma Pickup Truck

2016-Toyota-Tacoma-38

Are you as excited about the 2016 Tacoma as we are!? Here at Universal Toyota, we know the value of quality and finesse…which is why Toyota has rebuilt the beloved Tacoma to make it a better, smoother, more efficient way to travel. We can’t wait!

After a slew of photos made it on the web, Toyota finally revealed the new Tacoma at the Detroit Auto Show today.

Toyota says the 2016 Tacoma has been “rebuilt inside and out” featuring an all-new powertrain, updated suspension parts, and new tech features to bring the mid-size truck up to date as it sets out to compete against GM and itsnew Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models.

Beginning with the Tacoma’s frame, Toyota says it added high strength steel to enhance rigidity and overall strength, while ultra-high strength steel was integrated into the body shell using a new hot stamping process to reduce weight.

The truck’s suspension was re-tuned with Toyota claiming that it offers “a smoother on-road ride, while making it even more capable off-road”.

Power comes from a 2.7-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine carried over from the outgoing model and an all-new 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection. Toyota hasn’t given out any performance numbers yet.

Both engines will be linked to a new six-speed automatic transmission with electronic shift, while the bigger V6 will also be available with a six-speed manual gearbox.

On the outside, the new Tacoma has a more contemporary, chiseled appearance, while the interior has been modernized with a brand new dashboard featuring an electronically controlled, dual-zone air-conditioning system and a large touchscreen for the infotainment system.

Other notable features include a new tri-fold hard tonneau cover for securing gear, Blind-spot monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart key with push-button start and Qi wireless charging.

This is the Face of Toyota’s All-New 2016 Tacoma

After showing the tail of the 2016 Tacoma last week, Toyota has now brought the head of its all-new pickup truck into the spotlight.

The front-end shares some familiar styling traits with the
latest 4Runner SUV, albeit executed in a more rugged fashion.

Official details remain thin and the only thing we know for sure is that the next generation Tacoma will have its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

“The all-new 2016 Tacoma will be ready to once again set the benchmark for midsize pickup performance,” Toyota said in a statement. “Backed by a heritage of unwavering capability, an unbreakable attitude and new, rugged tech, Tacoma’s off-road prowess is more formidable than ever.”

Toyota i-Road electric three-wheeler gets green light for early production

toyota-i-road-electric-three-wheeler-early-production-hamo

Toyota‘s i-Road three-wheeler concept is set to make it off the drawing board and onto the road. Toyota has announced that a limited production run of the fully enclosed, tilting EV will begin shortly, with initial units being transferred to Toyota’s Ha:mo urban transport system trials in Toyota City.

When the i-Road burst onto the scene at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, it felt like one of those design concepts that, although innovative and exciting, would probably disappear as do most of that ilk. But now Toyota has put its money where its mouth is, and is producing a short production run, probably numbering in the hundreds, to add to it’s prototype Ha:mo urban transport system.

The i-Road is an electric personal mobility vehicle with two in-line seats, that leans into the corners like a motorcycle. With only five horsepower, a top speed of 45 km/h (30 mph), and a range of 50 km (30 mi), the i-Road is aimed squarely at an urban transport market.

Toyota is running its Harmonious Mobility Network (Ha:mo for short) in Toyota City, located in Aichi, Japan. Designed as a system to improve urban transportation by combining private car and public transportation, Ha:mo is aimed at making both urban transportation and the urban culture more people- and community friendly.

The Ha:mo RIDE project is a car sharing system using ultracompact electric vehicles that provides transportation to and within the city center; for example, between a train station and a passenger’s workplace. At present the system has ten Toyota COMS personal mobility vehicles and ten ToyotaPAS power assisted bicycles. These are available at four stations where they can be rented and returned after use.

In the planned expansion, these numbers will be increased to 100 of each, with 100 i-Roads being added in early 2014. The number of rental stations will be increased to seventeen, providing service at train stations and major public buildings to facilitate quick turnover of the rentals. A rental fee of 20 yen (about 20 US cents) per minute will also be instituted.
